Southern Fortress Gate – “Camels”

Behold the Southern Fortress Gate, a marvel of architectural ingenuity and historical intrigue. This grand entranceway boasts a vaulted passage, its imposing presence accentuated by a larger arch supported by sturdy pillars, standing sentinel against the passage of time.

Flanked by two formidable rectangular towers, the gate’s broken brick arch, a relic of antiquity, tells tales of battles long past. Once adorned with decorative elements, it now stands as a testament to the fortitude of those who defended these ancient walls.

Above the arch, a brick cornice adorns the interior facade, its intricate design a testament to the craftsmanship of generations gone by. Rising to a height of 13 meters, the gate earned the moniker “The Camels” in the early 20th century, owing to its divided appearance, reminiscent of two majestic beasts poised for battle.

Amidst this architectural splendor, amidst the echoes of centuries past, the great Bulgarian poet Ivan Vazov found inspiration. It was here, in 1882, that he penned his immortal ode to the beauty of the motherland, a timeless tribute to the land that gave birth to legends.

The Hisarya Roman Amfiteater

This architectural marvel, open to the sky yet enclosed on all sides, boasted seating encircling an elliptical arena where the drama of gladiatorial combat unfolded.

Wooden benches, perched on the sloping tiers above the arena, offered prime viewing for eager spectators. The main entrance, situated on the southern side, welcomed participants into the fray, while a revered statue of Nemesis, deity of the games, watched over the proceedings from a vaulted niche.

To the north, three entrances awaited the entrance of ferocious beasts, adding an element of danger and excitement to the spectacle. Along the elongated sides of the ellipse lay chambers for the diligent service staff, ensuring smooth operations behind the scenes.
