PloWine – The Journey

City, Civilizations & Wine – A Journey Through the Millennia

PloWine – The Journey is a curated city walking tour by SlowTours.BG that connects the rich history of Plovdiv with the enduring culture of wine — from prehistoric times to the present day.

This experience is designed for travelers who wish to discover the city beyond its beautiful façades and understand how wine has shaped its economy, religion, rituals, and social life across centuries.

City Walking Tour of Plovdiv

(Main Street, Roman Stadium, Dzhumaya Mosque, Old Town)

The walk begins along Plovdiv’s Main Street — the modern urban axis built above the layers of ancient Philippopolis.

We stop at the impressive Roman Stadium of Philippopolis, a monumental structure recalling the time when the city ranked among the most important centers of the Roman Empire.

Passing by the elegant Dzhumaya Mosque, we reflect on the Ottoman heritage and the cultural diversity that continues to define Plovdiv.

In the Old Town, we immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of Revival-period houses, cobbled streets, and archaeological remains that tell the story of a city inhabited for more than eight millennia.

Ancient Philippopolis was a thriving commercial, cultural, and religious center where wine held a special place. Located in the heart of Thrace — a land celebrated in classical sources for its wines and the cult of Dionysus — the city naturally became a center of wine culture.

Archaeological Museum – Wine Through the Centuries

The visit to the Regional Archaeological Museum includes a specialized lecture on the role of wine in ancient societies — from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

Through selected archaeological sites and authentic artifacts from the permanent exhibition, we explore:

  • The importance of wine among the ancient Thracians

  • Storage and drinking vessels used in rituals and daily life

  • Mystery cults and religious symbolism

  • The economic importance of wine trade in Roman Philippopolis

  • The transformation of wine’s meaning with the spread of Christianity

Although its functions evolved, wine’s central place in culture remained uninterrupted throughout the centuries.

Finale: The Taste of Contemporary Plovdiv

The tour concludes with a three-stage wine tasting in an elegant tasting room at the foot of one of Plovdiv’s most beautiful hills.

In a relaxed atmosphere, we make a natural transition from ancient wine traditions to modern winemaking in the region — experiencing how history lives on in today’s glass.
